The (mostly) good, the bad, and the ugly...
Music Fan Jeff

The mostly good:Nice looks. I like the mostly stainless steel housing, and actually like that Krups changed the top from stainless steel to plastic on this model since I have a tendency to set stuff on top of my coffee maker on occasion and the steel would get little scratches in it due to my bad habit.Easy to use...but what drip coffee maker isn't?Makes good drip coffee. I drink a lot of espresso and, no, this drip coffee doesn't compare to good espresso. It is quite drinkable, though, particularly if you use the "Aroma" setting to make a stronger brew. The bad:Water reservoir design could be better. It's a fairly thin band that runs from side to side at the top back of the coffee maker. The previous Krups model I used had a slightly larger opening so it was easier to pour water into the reservoir.Instruction manual could be better written. I know this isn't very important for an item like this, and many people probably won't even look at the manual because if you just want to make coffee (and not program the machine) then it's obvious how to plug the thing in and turn it on. The part of the manual that I took issue with is the use of the "Aroma" function. Present the manual to someone who's never used a feature like this and doesn't have good reasoning skills and they won't be able to use this feature. The problem is that the manual tells the reader to use the regular brewing instructions up to a certain step and then press the "Aroma" button when, actually, I think they meant to write that IN ADDITION to following the regular brewing instructions one needs to also press the "Aroma" button at the step indicated. They could also add that once the "Aroma" setting is selected, it remains on until the button is pressed again. So if you want a stronger brew all the time, you simply press that button once and it's the default brewing method. The ugly:This is really the reason I'm giving this product four stars instead of five, since my other issues above are relatively minor annoyances. For whatever reason, whoever designed this machine thought it would be good to make it double as a nightlight. It isn't just that the display/clock area is illuminated in bright blue light, but the entire water level window also glows a bright blue. This coffee maker glows the entire time it's plugged into a working electrical outlet and, judging from the manual, there's no way to turn off this "feature." I wouldn't mind so much if it only glowed when turned on, but glowing 24/7 is unnecessary and not aesthetically pleasing. Just how bright is it? My kitchen is nearly pitch black at night, despite having an oven/stove combo with two displays showing the time. This coffee maker puts out so much light that my kitchen is now illuminated enough to make coffee in the dark. Maybe that was the designer's intent, but that's what a light switch is for. To add insult to injury, when the brew cycle is done the blue light that illuminates the on/off switch starts flashing on and off and will continue to flash for two hours (the "stay warm" time) unless the coffee maker is turned off. How bright is this flashing light? Bright enough for me to notice via peripheral vision, sitting in another room 10 feet away that's being lit by a compact fluorescent bulb.

Leave it to me to find this to try the very DAY after buying the Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central 14-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Glass Carafe.... But after doing so & trying both I have to say, I think probably every drip machine on the market is made at the same factory with not much more than face plate differences? They are essentially identical in feature sets and performance although I AM concerned at all the forum threads about the Cuisinart DCC-1200 Brew Central 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers catching fire! Hopefully neither of my 2 NEW coffee makers OR our 20 year old (and still 100% PERFECT) old Braun 12 cup coffee maker will ever fail us in that way. This is a very simple and intuitive coffee maker. I never read the manual and to be honest, had just made my first EVER cup of coffee (in a drip machine) 4 days earlier when I had my wife train me on our antique Braun. At age 64, I figured it was time. Once I knew how I of course needed something fancy. THAT'LL teach my wife to get me involved....And now I have been endlessly playing with settings of either AROMA or BOLD etc to see what setting does what to change flavor if anything at all. On all 3 of my machines I do taste a marked difference with changing of the available settings. The newer machines also seem so much more efficient that when making 6 cups, I only use coffee grounds for 4 cups and set either on the REGULAR or NON BOLD settings and still get a very rich cup of coffee so saves me money there. I also bought 2 identical coffee bean grinders, the Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill. I use one for my wife's caffeinated and the other for my NON caffeinated beans. Now we bought the 2 of those at our local costco for just 30 bucks each so really found it affordable to create a true coffee Island if you will. The ease of programming is wonderful but I have to be honest. With all I read about the fires on the OTHER Cuisinart model, I never use any of the programming features. I only run these 3 coffee makers when I am in the room or room adjacent to see if there is ever any problem. Life is too short, caffeinated or not! One of the other things I find a little bit of an irritation on either of our new machines is filling the water. NONE of the newer machines we looked at has a lid to add water that either removes entirely of flips ALL the way over to allow easy filling of the water compartment. Not a huge deal but if like myself, if disabled you may have a bit of a challenge to easily fill that compartment completely or without spilling some into the chamber with your coffee grounds? Again, not a BIG deal. Just frustrated to see all the newer machines with lids only opening 90 degrees. Our old machine lid flips ALL the way over leaving the top 100% OPEN. So much nicer. The other strange thing (to me anyway) is that both the new machines take about 10-12 minutes to brew 6-12 cups. Our antique take 2 1/2 minutes! NO idea why, but that doesn't bother me in the least since I am retired. I just need to get busy & have it ready before my old wife gets up and starts kicking me around the house is all :-) So that about covers my new hobby of coffee making. Again, I am just too chicken to use any of the programmable setting for fear of burning down the house. As far as hot temps go I suppose I will never be any sort of coffee snob to be able to address that. I drink 2 mugs each morning and each mug is 16 ounces. It stays plenty warm for me even though I use a lot of cold from the fridge coffee creamer in each mug. By the time I get to my second mug (maybe 20-30 minutes) I find the same degree of warm/hot temp as I did when I had my 1st cup. So all I can say is it is plenty warm for ME anyway. I always have the microwave if I feel the need to fry my old tongue I suppose? I would give this a full 5 stars but until I see that if is reliable, I give it 4 stars and expect to upgrade to 5 if it hasn't failed in 6 months. I just don't dive into any new product after a couple days and declare it perfect. But if it continues to serve me well I always go back and upgrade it to any well deserved rating as appropriated. This a truly a NICE coffee maker!UPDATE 12-27-2012: I took several photo's to show features & differences but as of this date Amazon has NO provision to allow me to upload them. Never seen that before. If I ever see the option to add my own pictures I will to show advantages/disadvantages etc....In the meantime I need to add that the Krups has an always on bright blue LED light on both the main control AND water fill indicator making it easier to see what you are doing. It is however, noticeably harder to fill without getting water in the ground than I first thought. I have taken to putting a funnel into that water slot so I can fully empty the carafe into the proper compartment. Another item worth noting is that this Krups does NOT have any provision for a replaceable water filter. Now to me, this is actually a big plus. Because it means no added expense of replacing proprietary filter down the road, and it means I need to properly de-calcify and I assume this will prolong the life of the machine. Other option if really lazy is just use very cheap water that comes often if 2 1/2 gallon jugs with all that bad stuff already removed.

I bought this coffeepot to replace a Braun unit which had given me many years of faithful service. I have used it for 1 week. Makes really good coffee (I use filtered water). Definitely recommend using the Aroma setting - it takes a bit longer, but the coffee is richer. After brewing, the warmer stays on for 2 hours before shutting off.It is a little cumbersome to pour water in the tank and not also down the filter basket. The tank has a lighted sight gage which is very helpful. I pour the water first, then put the filter and coffee in.Overall, a nice programmable coffeepot.
