After using MC coffee maker brands these past 10 years (leaking decanters-premature element failures-fair coffee taste), went to the reviews and decided on this HB Ensemble 12 cup maker. Wow, besides a Great pouring decanter and great unit looks, the coffee comes out perfect every time! Keeping proportions equal, our morning java is rich and full bodied tasting. It seems to take a little longer, but the daily extra minute of wait these past 5 months is Worth Every Drop!

I originally posted this in the reviews for the red version of this coffee maker (the black one wasn't available on Amazon), though I have had the black one twice. I will say that HB is going to refund my purchase price and the shipping of the replacement coffee maker, so I am happy about that. The review below is copied and pasted from my original. Please also check other people's reviews under the red version regarding this coffee maker turning on randomly and/or not shutting off.-----------------------------I purchased this coffee maker for work so that we could make use of the timer feature - it would be used about once or twice a month for early meetings. A couple months into owning, we could smell burnt plastic. The hot plate had come on at some point and was on all weekend (we thought we smelled something Friday, but didn't think to check the coffee pot because the light was not on). Hamilton Beach agreed to ship a replacement under warranty (I sent a pic with the cord cut off), but I had to pay a $14.99 shipping fee.Within a week after receiving the replacement, I realized that it was having the same problem. I know that they suggest unplugging when not in use, but that's not always convenient, and not an excuse to cover themselves for something that's clearly a malfunction. It's a clear safety hazard to have the coffee pot and hot plate come on at random times. Looking at reviews, it appears that I'm not the only one who's had this problem.I thought it was a problem solely with the auto-shut off, where the light would turn off, but the hot plate stayed on. It's not. I was going to make coffee today, so I plugged it in. I went out to get water, and came back and everything was still okay, and the hot plate was cool and the coffee maker was not running (I have made a habit of checking it regularly). I then lifted the lid and moved the spout to put a filter in, and the pot came on and started steaming with the little bit of water that had been left inside from last use. It got hot immediately and I never even pressed the button and the light never came on. I'm going to contact Hamilton Beach again. At this point, I want a refund, not a replacement. There is obviously something wrong with the design of these coffee pots (or maybe certain batches not wired correctly, at least).

This is a simple coffee maker that does its job. The coffee is good and I'm satisfied with my morning cup o' joe. I recommend it for anyone who likes to keep things simple.
