This terrific bottom-of-the line coffee maker works like a champ. Its cone-shaped filter provides a rich full brew even without a "slow drip" option. Unless a flat-filter is exquisitely well sprayed and the water disperser stays clean and unclogged over time, the cone filters beat the flat-bottomed for taste and this is the only cheap coffee maker that has the cone that I could find.Unlike many carafes, including expensive ones, the Hamilton-Beach carafe is well shaped so that coffee pours smoothly and quickly yet without spilling over the sides. People have complained that it lacks an automatic shut-off switch but one can either remember to shut it off manually or in a worse case scenario, scrub the carafe clean and remember to shut if off the next time. This works as well as my high-end Braun, and unlike the Braun may be poured quickly without spilling.

My wife and I have had this coffee maker for a little over three weeks and we use it every morning. We have not had any problems with it at all so far. It keeps the coffee very hot, and is actually pretty quiet while it's brewing the coffee. We love this coffee maker. It is getting very difficult to find a basic coffee maker these days. Basic meaning.... not all the now common bells and whistles on it like clocks, timers, iPod connection, radios, auto grinders, programmable this programmable that, etc... I just want a coffee maker to be just a "coffee maker". Simple. This Hamilton Beach coffee maker is just that. By the way..... "cone" style filters are much better than the "basket" type because with the "cone" style, the coffee is more condensed, concentrated and therefore more flavorful using less coffee than with a "basket" type.In this day and age with commonplace becoming the expensive instant gratification brewing systems such as the Keurig, forget it. A complete waste of money. Just because it's new does not mean it's a good idea. Get one of these traditional type Hamilton Beach "cone" style coffee makers before the "basic" concept disappears forever. Much less $$ to use and the coffee taste's better anyway!

The Cadillac of Cheap Coffeemakers

All I look for in a coffeemaker is an on/off switch and a flavorful cup of hot coffee. It used to be easy finding inexpensive ones meeting that critera, but not so much anymore. The big box stores stock cheap Mr. Coffee models, and we've bought a few over the years. They work well, but Mr. Coffee carafes spill, and never show any sign of improvement. I decided to look elsewhere before buying another.Unfortunately WalMart sells a $9 Rival 12 cup coffeemaker. It's a cheapskate's nightmare. One use in our kitchen was enough to search anew for a replacement--it has a poorly made filter basket, makes tepid coffee and spills. Out it went. After reading the good reviews for the Hamilton Beach 12-cup coffeemaker, I decided to order one online as I can't find it locally. This cheapskate's happy again. It makes a great tasting cup of hot coffee and pours without spilling, all for under $20. My faith in an inexpensive coffeemaker is restored.12-26-12 UPDATE: I notice a few poor reviews. It's been nine months since I purchased this coffee pot. It still makes hot, good coffee, doesn't spill or leak. Even if it broke tomorrow, I think I got my $20 worth, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.
